Severe Reflux Disease? Try Vonoprazan

Vocinti (vonoprazan) is a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker (PCAB) increasingly used in gastroenterology for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Helicobacter pylori eradication. Its faster onset and stronger acid suppression compared to traditional proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) make it a promising therapy in the field

What is Vocinti (Vonoprazan)?

  • Vocinti is the brand name for vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker (PCAB).

  • Unlike PPIs, it directly blocks gastric acid secretion with rapid onset and longer duration of action.

  • Approved for GERD, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcers, NSAID-induced ulcers, and H. pylori eradication therapy.

Clinical Uses in Gastroenterology

  • GERD & Acid Reflux: Provides faster symptom relief and mucosal healing compared to PPIs.

  • Peptic Ulcers: Effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers, including those caused by NSAIDs.

  • Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Used in combination with antibiotics (amoxicillin + clarithromycin) for improved eradication rates.

  • Maintenance Therapy: Prevents relapse of healed erosive esophagitis with lower recurrence rates.

Risks & Considerations

  • Side effects: Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache.

  • Drug interactions: May interact with certain antibiotics and anticoagulants.

  • Long-term safety: Still under study compared to decades of PPI data.
