When To See A Gastroenterologist for Hiccups and Burping
Belching and Burping, What does your body tells you?
Introduction
Belching is a common digestive complaint. The average adult belches around 15 times a day and up to 60 times when they get older. However, there are some people burp more often than others, sometimes as many as one hundred times a day or even more!
What is belching?
Belching is the expulsion of air from the stomach through the mouth. It’s caused by air swallowing, or by swallowing too much food at once. Belching can also be triggered by drinking carbonated beverages and eating too fast, which causes liquids to go into your esophagus.
When you swallow, food travels from your mouth down through a valve at the top of your esophagus called “lower esophageal sphincter” (LES). If this valve doesn’t close properly after each swallow, you may feel like something wants to come up; this feeling is called heartburn or acid reflux. You might also notice burping when you eat certain foods or drink certain beverages like soda pop because they contain carbon dioxide gas bubbles that get trapped in your digestive system as they pass through it on their way out as flatulence (gas) or belching–or both.
Causes of belching
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is a condition that occurs when the valve between your esophagus and stomach doesn’t work properly, allowing gastric juices to flow back up into your esophagus.
Hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes through (or “herniates”) a weakness in your diaphragm muscle at the bottom of your chest cavity, creating an opening into which part of your upper digestive tract can slide through.
Eating too fast.
Drinking carbonated beverages like soda pop.
Smoking
Treatment for excessive burping
The first step in treating excessive burping is to identify the cause. If you’re eating or drinking something that triggers your belching, try eliminating it from your diet and see if the problem improves. In some cases, this will resolve itself on its own; if not, it may be time to see a doctor who can help determine what’s causing your symptoms.
If dietary changes don’t work and you think that there may be another underlying health issue causing excessive burping (such as GERD), then consider consulting with a gastroenterologist. They may recommend taking medications such as Nexium which reduce acid production in order to reduce stomach irritation; however these drugs do not cure GERD itself but rather treat its symptoms by reducing gastric acidity levels in the esophagus.
In addition to addressing any underlying medical issues that might contribute towards excessive belching (whether they’re dietary-related or not), exercise has been shown time and again as one of the best ways for people suffering from chronic flatulence problems like belching at night time . This is because exercise helps strengthen muscles around our abdomen area so they can better resist pressure exerted onto them by food passing through during digestion processes – which means less gas being produced!
People who suffer from excessive burping can benefit from a diet change, exercise and therapy.
Excessive burping is a common problem. It can be caused by many things, such as eating certain foods or drinking too much alcohol. Treatment varies depending on the reason for your excessive burping.
